Has any one tried a 55gr bt over 38gr of H380. Im going to try this load In my 700 BDL varmiter. The loading book says Its so accurate that Bill Hodgen named a powder after It.

Start at about 35 grains of H380 and work up. Different rifles have different characteristics. Ferinstance, my Savage .22-250 has a sweet spot at 37.6 grains of one particular lot of H380 with 55 grain Berger MEFs.

I'd recommend shooting at 200 yards on a calm day. Work up in half-grain increments. When you see the vertical on the groups tighten, that's a sweet spot.

It was Bruce Hodgdon, but he used a 52 gr. bullet for his favorite Varminter load of 38 gr of his then new powder. Load wise, there isn't a big difference between 52 gr. and 55 gr. bullets, but there is some. So follow Bogie's good advice, start lower and work up, as usual. You might easily get to 38.0 grains or even a little higher, but only you and your personal rifle will know if it is a safe load.
