1911 help

I am looking to get a stainless 1911 in 9mm. Something like the Kimber Pro Raptor II. I want something other than the Kimber. I find others I like but they get REALLY pricey. So what other companies should I look into? Would really like to stay under $1200.

Google Buy Springfield Armory 1911 9mm then check out Gun Broker listings.
I just took a look and found a Stainless Steel Range Officer in 9mm for $899.99 "Buy Now price" and it was NEW.
I prefer Springfield Armory over Kimber myself.

Look at Springfield Armory. I would suggest Rock Island, but I think theirs are nickel plated rather than stainless. You could also check Metro Arms (American Classic), and Shooters Arms manufacturing to see if they have a 9mm in their lineup.

The Colt is within your price range, and I doubt you'll find a better 1911 at anywhere near that price.

I picked up the Ruger 1911 in 9mm a little over a year ago and like it a lot, for what it is.

It's simply a stainless no-frills 1911 that has been pretty reliable, a little picky about mags, with a decent 1911 trigger (a little more pre-travel than I'd like, but acceptable), and good accuracy out to 25 yards (as far as I've shot at anything with it).

It would be nice if it had front strap checkering, night sights, and a couple other details that my more expensive 1911s have, but considering that I bought it for less than $650, I really can't complain. The trigger is surprisingly clean-breaking, and it feels like it has about a 5 lb. pull. In fact, in spite of its lack of doohickeys and mods, it's my favorite 9mm pistol; it's just the most fun to shoot and it is more accurate than any of my other 9s, slow or fast fire. My only real wish is that it came with 13-14 rd mags; 9-10 is just not enough fun!

I wish I could give you more options for you, but I'm just not that familiar with all the SS 9mm 1911s out there.

I have the SR1911 in stainless. Commander sized. I like it, a lot, but admit I'm not a 1911 fanboy.

I don't know Beentown, if you want something like a Pro Raptor, why not buy a Pro Raptor? Is it price, reports of breakage or functional problems?

I haven't owned that particular model, but have owned three 9MM Kimbers, and one 38 Super Kimber set up as 9MM also. The one thing they all had in common was functional reliability. This, without having to adjust, tune, tinker with or polish anything. Even the Kimber I set up for both 38 Super and 9MM works in either caliber with boring reliability. And other than one cracked magazine, probably 15+ years ago, nothing has ever broken on a Kimber I've owned. Undoubtedly, plenty of 1911 type 9MMs available within your budget, I've owned some of them myself. Just wish they'd all worked as well as the much maligned Kimbers........

Thanks for the ideals all. Why not a Kimber? Had them and just looking to expand my ownership experience. Truthfully I think they are overpriced but I am also known to be too frugal....

And this I don't understand, 416 stainless is wonderfully machinable, and the market lusts after SS. Huge demand.

Also, after saying they were making a small 1911 in .380 complete with a locked breech they shove a blowback into the market, Come on RIA, you have many tens of thousands of loyal fans, if Colt and Sig can give us a locked breech why not you too? Even my old Llama's all run great, it can't be that tough.

I happen to agree with you, the "Baby Rock" is not a 1911 and calling it that 'til the cows come home won't make it into one. But, since you mentioned Llama, you must be aware that the Baby Rock is a direct copy of the Llama Micromax 380.

Check out the S&W 9mm 1911 Pro Series. I had one and it was very good gun, fast and accurate, never had a bit of trouble with it. Should be able to find one in your price range.

If you will be satisfied with a 1911ish pistol and don't mind buying used, there are a large number of Star BMs out there right now in 9mm at attractive prices. I believe J&G, Aim Surplus, and Bud's Gunshop have them. Others probably do, too. I just picked one up today. I haven't shot it yet but I have shot one of its bigger siblings, the Star Model B Super. It's a good shooting pistol and I'm sure the BM will be, too.

In my case, the sum of the parts was greater than the whole... I spent what I thought was an enormous amount on my Kimber ($1100, back in 2002) but the pistol has proven to be fantastic and well worth the money.

On the other hand... I bought a Taurus PT1911 as a project pistol for $400. Forged parts, stainless barrel... it looked pretty good. I found you get what you pay for.... the Taurus was not greater than the sum of it's parts... it really was barely worth $400.

Ruger makes a good 1911 and their offering in 9mm with an alloy frame and Novak sights makes up for a good CC gun. Reports are positive in this and other forums. While a totally SS 1911 appeals to some, the weight makes all day carry a real chore, and in 9mm, the reduction in recoil really isn't necessary. But if you're looking for a range gun or one that'll be used in defensive pistol games (ie. multiple thousands of rounds per year), maybe a SS model makes more sense.

I own both of their .45 ACP SS 1911's (the 5" model and the CMD) and both compare favorably with my Colts. Accuracy and reliability is all I could ask for, nearly 100% for several thousand rounds and both will send WWB 230 FMJ's into 2" gps at 25 yds from a rest.
