I'm just curious on this one. For you 1911 guys, I'm assuming it's more the platform and less the caliber, but I know lots of you highly prefer the 45 regardless. I'm also going to figure most would choose a 3rd option of join the revolution until someone makes a 45 acp 1911, but if you could choose a 45 acp handgun (non-1911) OR a 9mm 1911 which would you choose?

I own 1911's in .45acp, 9mm, 10mm, and .38 Super so if I HAD to choose I guess it would be the 9mm.

I am OK with the M1911 platform in .45 but have no desire for it otherwise. I would take a Sig P220 over a non-45 caliber 1911 platform.

This is not to say I do not like the 9mm since I own several.

This is an easy one, I only own 1911's and have them in .45 and 9mm, so my choice would be 9mm 1911.

I really do like the 1911 platform, but I also really like the .45 ACP cartridge as well. There are plenty of good .45 ACP platforms out there that I would love to aquire, but the lack of funds keeps me to a couple of purchases per year. In no particular order I plan on eventually buying a Sig 220, S&W 4506, HK USP .45, and a S&W N frame with moon clips.

For another caliber in the 1911, I'd probably go with .38 super or 10mm. My 9mm is a Browning Hi Power.

I'm assuming this is an 'if you could only have one' type of poll so I voted non-1911 45. Reason being, I value reliability over all other features of firearms. I own at least 10 1911s and have owned more in the past. Of those, only 1 has been 100% reliable with any ammo through at least 1000 rounds (TRP). Several had one or two failures and I consider them reliable. However, several have needed repairs/upgrades/different mags/ect.... (usually extractor tension adjustment). That said, 1911s are such sweet shooters that I keep buying them :D

So that's my experience with 1911s. Other platforms have performed better (Glocks, M&Ps, FNX/FNPs, ect...) have all gone over 1k easily without any failures. So, on that basis I selected the non-1911 option.

I'm not really sure how to answer your question I have 2 45 autos that are not 1911s and no 1911s in 9mm. however of my 10 1911s only 6 are 45s. I guess I like both the platform and the caliber pretty well. I do want to get a SA EMP 9mm though

I prefer the platform. I have a USPc chambered in 45acp, but prefer the 1911 platform for shooting the caliber. I'm going to pick up a G21 - but only because the mags are interchangeable with my Kriss Vector SDP. YMMV.

My only 1911 style gun is a Coonan Classic in 357 magnum. Other than that all my hand guns are revolvers.

I picked 1911 style mostly because I dont shoot 45ACP. I think I would shoot a 9mm over a 45 just because of cost.

it is the perfect combination but many people like the 1911 in other calibers as well. john browning built the perfect platfrom for many calibers.

I'd take the 9mm 1911 over a 45acp non-1911. If I bought some random 45acp other than for CCW I'd never shoot it because I've already got a 1911 in 45.

How could you go wrong with a platform as iconic as a 1911. i cant think of any other weapon (except maybe a sword or a rock) that has been in production in its origanal state for so long. I own a Kimber 1911 -9mm.

This poll makes my head hurt..:p

I bought my 1911 to shoot .45...I have my Beretta's for 9mm, tho I'm contemplating a 9mm STI Spartan for a xmas gift to myself this year and I'm not considering buying another .45.

9mm 1911 it is!

Since you didn't specify what the gun is to be used for I picked the platform that is most fun to shoot with the cheapest ammo.

I think the .45 is the perfect cartridge for the 1911 platform. If it were an either or, I'd take a .45 non 1911 overa 9mm 1911. I personally like shooting the .45 over every other handgun cartridge out there.

I voted for the .45 in another platform. I would have to look around at a few but a USP would likely be near the top of the list.

For me its the platform over the caliber argument...

I own a variety of 1911's ( 4" and 5" guns ) in 9mm and .45 acp...and I'll take a 1911 in either caliber over anything else ! A 1911 from Wilson Combat in 9mm ( a 5" all stainless gun ) is hands down one of the top 5 guns in my safe...

Top 5 handguns in my safe ( in no particular order ) because I change my mind every week:

a. Wilson Combat 5" 1911 in 9mm
b. Wilson Combat 5" 1911 in .45 acp
c. Sig Sauer X-Five in .40S&W
d. S&W model 27-2 4" revolver, .357 mag, Nickel finish
e. Freedom Arms, mod 83, 5 shot single action revolver in 4 3/4" barrel / .357 mag ...its a new addition ( and right now I can't go to the range without it ).

and I'm leaving out some darn fine guns ....an Ed Brown 1911, some other S&W revolvers in model 18's, 19's, 29's...some nice rim fires..even some Sig Sauer 226's ...
