The 14 Characteristics of Fascism
by Lawrence Britt

Political scientist Dr. Lawrence Britt recently wrote an article about fascism ("Fascism Anyone?," Free Inquiry, Spring 2003, page 20). Studying the fascist regimes of Hitler (Germany), Mussolini (Italy), Franco (Spain), Suharto (Indonesia), and Pinochet (Chile), Dr. Britt found they all had 14 elements in common.

He calls these the identifying characteristics of fascism. The excerpt is in accordance with the magazine's policy.

The 14 characteristics are:

Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Fascist regimes tend to make constant use of patriotic mottoes, slogans, symbols, songs, and other paraphernalia. Flags are seen everywhere, as are flag symbols on clothing and in public displays.

Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Because of fear of enemies and the need for security, the people in fascist regimes are persuaded that human rights can be ignored in certain cases because of "need." The people tend to look the other way or even approve of torture, summary executions, assassinations, long incarcerations of prisoners, etc.

Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
The people are rallied into a unifying patriotic frenzy over the need to eliminate a perceived common threat or foe: racial , ethnic or religious minorities; liberals; communists; socialists, terrorists, etc.

Supremacy of the Military
Even when there are widespread domestic problems, the military is given a disproportionate amount of government funding, and the domestic agenda is neglected. Soldiers and military service are glamorized.

Rampant Sexism

The governments of fascist nations tend to be almost exclusively male-dominated. Under fascist regimes, traditional gender roles are made more rigid. Opposition to abortion is high, as is homophobia and anti-gay legislation and national policy.

Controlled Mass Media

Sometimes to media is directly controlled by the government, but in other cases, the media is indirectly controlled by government regulation, or sympathetic media spokespeople and executives. Censorship, especially in war time, is very common.

Obsession with National Security
Fear is used as a motivational tool by the government over the masses.

Religion and Government are Intertwined
Governments in fascist nations tend to use the most common religion in the nation as a tool to manipulate public opinion. Religious rhetoric and terminology is common from government leaders, even when the major tenets of the religion are diametrically opposed to the government's policies or actions.

Corporate Power is Protected
The industrial and business aristocracy of a fascist nation often are the ones who put the government leaders into power, creating a mutually beneficial business/government relationship and power elite.

Labor Power is Suppressed
Because the organizing power of labor is the only real threat to a fascist government, labor unions are either eliminated entirely, or are severely suppressed .

Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Fascist nations tend to promote and tolerate open hostility to higher education, and academia. It is not uncommon for professors and other academics to be censored or even arrested. Free expression in the arts is openly attacked, and governments often refuse to fund the arts.

Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Under fascist regimes, the police are given almost limitless power to enforce laws. The people are often willing to overlook police abuses and even forego civil liberties in the name of patriotism. There is often a national police force with virtually unlimited power in fascist nations.

Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Fascist regimes almost always are governed by groups of friends and associates who appoint each other to government positions and use governmental power and authority to protect their friends from accountability. It is not uncommon in fascist regimes for national resources and even treasures to be appropriated or even outright stolen by government leaders.

Fraudulent Elections
Sometimes elections in fascist nations are a complete sham. Other times elections are manipulated by smear campaigns against or even assassination of opposition candidates, use of legislation to control voting numbers or political district boundaries, and manipulation of the media. Fascist nations also typically use their judiciaries to manipulate or control elections.

Maybe it's just me, but I can't find anything wrong with the statements. He seems to be pretty much dead nuts, spot on accurate. Am I missing something? By the way, has anyone seen "V For Vendetta" yet?

I don't think there's anything incorrect about his assertions ... The picture is what's going on in this country today. I probably should have been more clear on that.

Be careful guys. Folks around here will call you a conspiracy theorist. They've made up their minds, don't confuse them with the facts. Excuse me while I work on my tin foil hat.:)

The listed characteristics are somewhat applicable to Fascism, but they've been carefully selected and reworded to have maximum applicability to the current administration. It's the liberal version of the selective list of terrorist incidents passed around in conservative email boxes.

I don't like being led around by the nose by either left or right. The list leaves out some major characteristics of Fascism that (inconveniently) don't apply to the current administration, namely such things as one-party rule, kangaroo courts, and economic corporatism. Agitprop is insulting to anyone with two brain cells to rub together, whether it comes from the left or the right.

GoSlash27,
V was a pretty good visual description of Fascism, don't you think? That movie HAD to be made. A decent story line too. Whoops! I dropped my brain cell. It's the only one I have, got to find it.:)

Let's see. Omitted characteristics?

One-party rule? For instance when the only candidates for President went to the same college where they were members of the same secret society and during the last election agreed on all the current military actions, just not on how to fund them? There's not a dime's worth of difference in the two major parties in the States any more. Consider Republican Guiliani of NY, for example.

Kangaroo Courts, that'd be the sort of court with sealed records, answerable to no one? We've got one of those -- and the Administration bypasses even it when it would be inconveniently slow.

Economic Corporatism.... Umm, yeah, there aren't any giant corporations the the U. S. deeply in bed with the Government no matter which of the Tweedle-Dee or Tweedle-Dumber parties in charge, and they're not getting bigger, oh heavens no!

I love my country but it's marching over the edge fast: left, right, left, right.... Go lemmings go!

Might be time to try something different.

Well stated Roberta X. You beat me to it.

These facets of fascism (The first 2) are just currently, cleverly concealed but exist all the same.

How anyone can't see the Economic Corporatism is beyond me.

In all honesty the other two are obvious as well IMO ... but they attempt to conceal them.

Harry, that would be untrue, at least in the famous version crediting Mussolini. Trains in Fascist Italy were notoriously undependable, schedule-wise.

I believe in credit where credit is due but there's none here. While there may be something to be said (though not by me) for a well-run and essentially benevolent dictatorship, such things are so rare as to be statistically meaningless, especially in larger countries. Even the best examples (Kemal Ataturk, for instance) have a dark side. Lord Acton's maxim holds: Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely.

How many generations seperate Roman Emperor Augustus from Caligula? Darned few.

What's wrong with "this" picture ?
First of all, for what it's worth, it's Stop children, not look children
Powerful and Continuing Nationalism
Doesn't pretty much everyone. Are the Puerto Ricans in my community now considered fascist
Disdain for the Recognition of Human Rights
Oh yes all that torture and those executions and assassinations. All those violations of human rights like allowing the illegals the free use of our government services and facilities and just allowing our fascist border guards to shoot them in the butt with impunity
Identification of Enemies/Scapegoats as a Unifying Cause
OK which one are the fascists here the Jackasses or Elephants, The Illegal alien rights activists, calling immigration laws racist or the MinuteMen, calling the illegals a drain on out communities. The teachers or the parents. The kids or the old farts who wear the pants correctly?
Supremacy of the Military
So America was a fascist state even in the 40's when we helped liberate the world from fascism
Rampant Sexism
Let me check with Hillary and Condi and get back to that one
Controlled Mass Media
Are you talking about the media that is not allowed to criticize our government, which one would that be?
Obsession with National Security
As opposed to 9international appeasement?
Religion and Government are Intertwined
Must be why children must cite the words "under God" when they say the pledge and the Ten Commandments must be prominently displayed in all court houses in Alabama or the judges will be fired
Corporate Power is Protected
What's good for GM is good for America, but then we're going back to the 40's again
Labor Power is Suppressed
Oh those suppressed unions, must be why our schools are in such bad shape, or why the US can compete so equally with foreign labor
Disdain for Intellectuals and the Arts
Would that be why both candidates in the last presidential election proudly outlined their HARVARD educations, or why the left is always touting the intellectual prowess of their last president and their next hopeful.
Obsession with Crime and Punishment
Must be why the Border Patrol is so effective in curbing the invasion, or why the murder rate in Fla is so low this year
Rampant Cronyism and Corruption
Again then who is the fascist the Democrats or the Republicans.
What "regime" in history has not had it's share of examples of power
corrupting
Fraudulent Elections
Back to this one again.
Dems lost get over it.
That has been confirmed by independent research from some major newspapers, some of them liberal

You just outlined problems that have existed in society as a whole form the beginning of society as a whole. Examples can be found in all forms of government, from the family level to the international level.

Bravo, Joab, Bravo! i am getting sick of people who claim that we are on the fast track to fascism and then make blind statements about how they could do so much better for the nation and then fail to tell us how. the only way that my life has really been affected by the Bush administration in the last 6 years is that i get to keep more of my taxes and i havent been blown up on a plane. other than that my life has gone on pretty normally.

I don't often agree with Joab on politics, but the man hit the nail on the head.

Look at all of the Military Parades we're having, extolling the virtues of the power we have. I'm missing the date that Universal Conscription was reinstated, as well.

The use of military tribunals for citizens is also rampant, right?

I've noticed that the unions are suffering multiple fatalities among their hierarchies now, too. Most suspicious..........NOT.

We need to have that external enemy. After all, just because a group of terrorists have declared that all of us should be dead, and killed 3000 people in one day, must mean that they're working for the government. If we had a real democracy, that wouldn't of happened.

Man, Reynolds must love some of these people. Parsing anothers words to apply them to something that you don't like is hardly original. It simply avoids the necessity to think long enough to develop a real comparison. Unfortunately, it also leaves you with the one-size-fits-all outlook that truly represents Facism.:barf: :barf:

So, Joab, we're all just honky-dorey here? Yeah, no. We banned gay marriage for what reason? Religious reasons. We have made terrorist a new buzzword and any kind of legislation now that uses "Counter-terrorism" or the like will have to get passed or else you hate America! The military is being glorified. It's great we have people who will defend us but they're not the greatest thing out there in the world, damn. Notice the meme "Support Our Troops", talk about a cowardly cheap shot to make anyone who opposes the war some draft dodger who spits on vets. I was in the military and I don't support the current war. Notice we also have never-ending wars: War on Communism (there are still millions of communists out there), War on Drugs (I know from experience this one is a waste of money, especially after all the weed I smoked in High School), War on Terror (this one is the Holy Grail of Never-ending wars because it can really never end, there will always be radicals who blow **** up, from Hannibal to Guy Fawkes to Osama Bin Laden), War on Poverty (no need to elaborate, and would you like fries with that?).

This country is flirting with Facism and it's about to get to second base. Soon we'll have habitat zones where you have to stay put like in Soviet Russia for "your own good". The one bomber from 9/11 we do have in custody is beating a legal system. I'm thinking they are allowing him to do this in order to secure more expanisions on their power claiming things like, "The current laws hinder us from putting these dangerous people away! Let's make an amendment that circumvents the BOR because it will save lives!!!! Who can enjoy liberty when they're dead?!" and then Johnny Sheep will be like, "I'll do it because I wanna save the baby seals from being blown up! Let's do it for Amerika! Anyone who disagrees loves terrorism and is probably a godless monster!"

A little goofy on my phrases but that's what it feels like when I hear some over patriotic idiot driving around with fifteen flags on his car and a million of those stupid yellow ribbons on the back. Buying something has a slogan doesn't make the slogan automatically true.

All you people who claim we are all just peachy keen and the new anti-terror laws are great, keep burying your head in the sand. Ever since the Czar was killed the Fat Cats have been terrified of free-thinking and armed people. That's what most gun control laws come from. People got tired of the Tsar (I like to use both ways if I mention it more then once) just treating them like crap so they overthrew him. Not too great with the end result but still, it proved a point that people will not put up with that crap for very long.
