Well i was going through some old ammo at the station and found these 12g round that are only about 1 3/4" long and say flare burn time 6 sec for marine use only. Well i dont work on the water so i made the comment "what the hell are these for" And an MPO responded "for shooting down the hallway on midnights, hahahaha" I thought to myself these have potential fun out in the country written all over them. Any experience with something like this? What kind of range or flare up were talking about?

They're for use in flare guns.
If you fire one out of a shotgun, it might make it out of the barrel. Then again, it might not, and you'll get to yell and wave around your smoking shotgun as the burning phosphorous shell lodged in it turns the barrel red-hot at one point and makes it droop.
Basically, fire them in a shotgun and you might be looking at a new barrel. They're for flareguns.

ive found them at walmart in 3 packs, they are plastic shells which are longer than the standard 12ga shells but will chamber into a 3inch gun if you load them by hand.
they have about a 100yard range in my experience shooting them out of an 18inch escort pump, no damage to the barrel
i use them alot for starting bonfires, the flare gets into the thickest part and burns long enough to get things going pretty well.

I knew a guy who traveled through Canada every year to go salmon fishing in Alaska. He carried a flare gun in his camper.....

All the crazy rounds sold in those newsprint fliers come to mind; dragon rounds, flechette rounds, shotgun rounds full of chains, rubber rounds, gas canisters, etc, etc. They're on the page next to the throwing stars and the Ninja gear, right?

you probably should only use them in a flare gun. i don't have one. but have fired a few olin brand red meteors,12 ga. short shells less than 2" i think. i fired them out of an ithaca 66 super single. with a full choke. that did not work too well. it took about 5 seconds for the flare to burn down enough to exit the muzzle. never fired them before . so i didn't know what was wrong with the first one. when the seond one did the same thing i stopped. did not damage the barrel at all luckily. if you do shoot them out of your shotgun. be sure the choke is no tighter than imp. cyl. and i would only recommend using them for emergency signaling. another company was making all plastic 2 and 3/4" size 12 ga. they had them in red,white,yellow and green. my father has a 5 round box of each. i just carry pencil flares for emergencies when i am out hunting. haven't had to fire them yet

Required on boats here in Florida,, dont know why as so many idiots blew their boats up with em..But just in case your boat breaks down out in the middle of the gulf, even in the daylight those flares can be seen a long way off.

i should have mentioned that the barrel is cylinder bore, and i believe that it is chrome lined? either way there is never any residue left after the gun is cleaned and i only shoot flares exclusively, never a flare and then regular rounds without cleaning before the regular rounds
