10mm Rifle

The thread about the 327 federal rifle got me to wondering about a 10mm rifle. The 10mm out of a short barreled rifle would be a very good woods gun imo. The round is already acheiving 1600 fps and over 750 ftlbs of energy out of a Glock 20.

Do you think the longer barrel would aid the round or hender it? I would think it would help espeicially with the heavier 180gr loads...

A lever action would be nice, and the ammo capacity would be great due to the relatively short cartridge.
An auto loader like the old ruger 44mag or Marlin 9mm rifles would be even better! It would make for a great short to intermediate ranged hog/deer gun.

What do you all think?

A 10mm lever action rifle would be great! Id also like to see some kind of bolt action rifle in 10mm like a ruger 77/10. I always loved rifles that are chambered for revolver/pistol cartridges.

The best candidate for a 10mm rifle is the KRISS. (Yes, its a rifle unless you SBR it). Its recoilless system and substantial capaciy makes it perfect for this cartridge.

I've still got a spare CAv Mk2 lower and I've been considering having a 10mm barrel made. Supposedly, a 6.8spc bolt and a pistol length gas system on a 16" barrel works.

I may have to look into this! An AR in 10MM would be great!
Wonder how you could get the mags to work or if you would have to have an adapter made to accept a different mag like with the other pistol caliber uppers...

If Ruger would make their carbine in 10mm that took pistol mags, PC 9 and PC40 I think.....I would buy them buy the six pack.

Might be nice, but it would not be commercially viable to do it. The 10mm has been around a long time and has just never really caught on. The .44mag is too entrenched and will do everything and more that the 10mm will do in a carbine length pistol caliber rifle. But, just from the standpoint of making another gun available to the public, I say bring it on.

Something on the order of a Marlin Camp carbine, or the Ruber Police Carbine, using double stack mags (Glock mags) would be interesting. Flatter than a .45ACP, more bullet than a 9mm and faster than a .40.

Iron's probbly got it though, the .44 does what the 10mm would do, and more. So the question is, why did Ruger nix their .44 auto? They were selling, but not enough to satisfy the bean counters that now run Ruger since Bill Ruger is gone.

Lose the bolt 10mm, .44 and .357 though.

What about a 10mm Mag, built on a blown out x39 case????????? Use AK mags and the AK action, or a Mini for that matter.

I can't complain about Oly...I've got a Wolverine in Black & my wife has a Pink one...
darn fine shooters :)

They ain't High Standard (CT) quality, but nobody expected them to be...
They go bang when the trigger's pulled, and don't jam...its all we need :D

I built a 10mm AR-15 carbine several years ago from a Bushmaster lower and an Oly upper. It's sweet! Shame 10mm ammo is so darn expensive. It is my preferred home defense weapon.

The Marlin Camp Carbine and the Ruger Police Carbine were blowback actions and the 10mm Auto would be too much for them. The Ruger Deerfield action might handle it, but if they didn't sell enough of them in 44 mag to keep the line alive, they sure weren't going to make much on the same gun in 10mm, which hasn't been a commercial success in pistols, much less rifles.

I know it's not what you meant but my love for the 10mm lead me to the 38-40 when I was getting set up for CAS.looking at some of his loads for the blackhawk I'd bet you could get near 2000 fps with a 180 out of a 92 winchester.

The workings of traditional lever actions use a rimmed cartridge.That does not mean a lever 10 mm can't be done,but it might be better in a box vs tube mag.That means a new platform rather than a retrofit,which costs $.A 41 mag is easier.
I suppose if we could still find M-1 carbines at gunshows for $50 a guy could put a bunch of work into trying to convert one,but at today's carbine prices,it does not make sense.
The old Win 401 SL was blowback,but it was done with a massive,heavy bolt .Made for a somewhat heavy rifle and the recoil out of porportion to the cartridge.
But,yeah,a 6 lb or less 16 in bbl locked breech double stack 10 mm could be done.I'm sure it would be fun to shoot.
For myself,something like the EAA Witness Hunter,6 in bbl double stack custom shop match grade single action semi-auto handgun would fit in a holster,so I would not have to carry it like a carbine.I'm pretty sure,sitting,leaning against a rock or tree,forearms on my knees,a 10 in paper plate at 100 yds would not be real hard to hit.At 50 yds,it would not be too hard standing up.For me,I think the direction I would go to enjoy the 10 mm is a good double stack handgun.An STI or Fusion on a wide 1911,or the EAA floats around in my fantasies.If I an going to carry a carbine,I'd prefer a 300 yd cartridge.

.404, 416 Rigby, 450-400 all make very nice cartridges suitable for everything up to elephants !! :D :D
