10mm 1911 chewing brass up

I have a full-size Kimber Eclipse in 10mm that has a habit of catching the brass and ripping gashes through the mouth of them when it shoots. Sometimes it also spits brass directly back at me, hitting me in the face. I've been using Federal American Eagle in it. Is this an ammo issue, i.e. not powerful enough for the gun to completely recoil or something much more sinister? I'm willing to switch to Double-Tap if that will fix it with no further gun modifications.
