10 mm hanguns

What handguns are chambered for this round?

I know Glock makes them. Colt Delta Elite is another choice, though I assume this is out of production.

And, from looking at ballistic tables, it would seem 10 mm and 40 S&W are fairly similar...

I have always thought 10 mm is a more powerful round, but have never shot one; how does it compare to 40?

Other 10mms:

EAA Witness - Full size and compact
Springfield Omega - Long out of production
Smith & Wesson 1066, 1076, 1086 - Out of production but relatively plentiful
Smith & Wesson 610 - current production revolver
I believe STI chambers some pricey 1911s in 10

Most factory loadings are pretty tame compared to what you can do with handloads and/or the first loadings from Norma.

As a rule of thumb...

...180gr loadings from the major manufacturers should be avoided like the plague. Those tend to be downloaded FBI-spec loads. The two easiest-to-find serious 10mm loads around here are Federal's 170gr Hi-Shok JHP and the 175gr Winchester Silvertip. Cor-Bon, Triton and Pro-Load all load stout 10mm stuff, too.

Advertised Velocities (no particular order):

Winchester Super-X 175gr STHP @ 1290 FPS
Cor-Bon 135gr JHP @ 1400 FPS
Cor-Bon 150gr JHP @ 1325 FPS
Cor-Bon 165gr JHP @ 1250 FPS
Cor-Bon 180gr JSP @ 1300 FPS
Cor-Bon 200gr Penetrator @ 1150 FPS
Pro-Load 135gr Nosler JHP @ 1440 FPS
Pro-Load 155gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1350 FPS
Pro-Load 180gr Gold Dot JHP @ 1200 FPS
Triton Quik-Shok 155gr @ 1400 FPS
Federal Hi-Shok 155gr JHP @ 1330 FPS
Hornady XTP 155gr JHP @ 1260 FPS
Hornady XTP-Full 180gr JHP @ 1180 FPS

Note that all of these figures are far above anything produced by .40S&W factory loadings. A favorite is the Winchester Super-X 175gr STHP, although it is worth pointing out that the 1290 FPS figure is for a 5.5" test barrel and the actual velocity out of a 4.5" barreld Glock 20 is more like 1200 or so based on chrono results I've seen posted around here. I've personally shot the 175gr Silvertip, 155 & 180gr Pro-Load and 165gr Cor-Bons and all were reliable and accurate.

As for 10mm firearms, of those currently manufactured the Glocks are the best by far. My 20C is very accurate and completely reliable. The EAA Witness 10mm is a good gun too, and a steal at ~$300, but is just OK in the accuracy department. It was a very soft recoiling gun, however. I sold it to a friend and he is very happy with it. The porting on the Glock 20C does a great job of reducing muzzle flip and felt recoil, too... and Glock has a factory drop-in 6" hunting barrel that has worked really well, too.

And of course there's the MP5/10 which uses the same magazines as the MP5/40. Ohh, a 10 mm smg which HK claims is effective out to 275 yards! Yes! Me want.

Also,

to shamelessly plug another hangout of mine, Glock Talk has an entire forum by, for and about the 10mm Auto cartridge and its aficionados.

I second the recommendation on the Glock 20. I have both the 22 and 20 and more often than not the 22 stays at home and "BIG BROTHER" comes to the range with me. I honestly think that the recoil is very similar between the two, and 10mm has the advantage in loading flexibility.

Ed Brown Products offers their Class A Limited in 10mm.
Para-Ordnance made the P10 in that caliber in 1998.
Strayer-Voigt makes the Infinity in 10mm.
And don't forget the American Derringer Model 1!("You shoot it!" "I'm not gonna shoot it, YOU shoot it!" "Let's get Mikey, he'll shoot anything..."):)

But seriously, the Glocks are the best choice. 1/3 to 1/2 the cost of the custom guns, reliable, mild recoil(for a 10), accurate, readily available, etc.

I've owned a G20, Delta Elite, and EAA Compact Witness in 10mm. The Witness is the sole survivor in my collection. The Glock was too big for my smallish hands and was unreliable (but had great capacity - 15+1 - WOW!!; the Delta Elite was OK (still wish I had it - if only for the collector's value); the Witness, like Baby Bear's porridge, was just right. All steel to absorb recoil, best grip style of all three, and reasonable capacity for a compact 10mm (10+1). It is my CCW gun and I love it. Plus, EAA sells conversion assemblies for most other popular calibers.
