    ideal CCW/SD?

Not talking make/model, but conceptually, what makes the ideal weapon for CCW and home defense? I'm a big fan of the heavies, 230g 45 cal loaded to anything at or over 850 fps. Cocked and locked single-action is a must. The simplicity of a 4-6" bbl revo with 44's or 45's gives a certain measure...

    It's OK to print

There's a tendency toward fear of being "exposed" when carrying concealed. Just want to remind everyone, especially the noobs, that it's not the end of the world if someone sees your piece. As far as the law is concerned (assuming you're legal to carry) you aren't brandishing or anything else...

    Uh, so TFL is back....

Wow. Blast from the past. Just stumbled upon the site through a search. This thing closed down like six years ago didn't it? I remember it being a solid bnch. Look forward to perusing the posts I've missed! Glad to see you all again!!!:D

1911 - hardest part to conceal

Seems like in general people have the most trouble concealing the butt of the 1911- or any pistol I guess. For me, it's the beavertail/hammer. Seems to really stick out there more than anything else. 4:00 - 5:00 it's no prob, but getting around to 3:00 it really starts showing. The butt, on the...

    .450 Marlin?

Anybody shot the 1895M? Looks like a winner to me. I wish the barrle was a bit longer, capacity a bit higher, but it must be the end-all of lever action guide guns, no? 300gr doing 2320, 400gr doing 2000fps.... Daddy like. :D

    .308 vs. 7mm-08 from 16 1/2" bbl

Anybody have an educated guess as to the velocities that could be expected from such a thing? (Ruger compact, to be specific.) And what would make one preferable over the other (efficiency, etc.)? 7mm-0 162g from a 24" is about the same speed as a .308 165g from a 23", so I'm thinking the...

    horizontal mag carrier?

Anybody make one? Why not? Wear it in front of the hip, support side, bullets down and forward, pull back to clear the carrier. I'm thinking Lou's Talon would be perfect for this. The benefit is - of course - not having that mag jamming in your ribs! And it would conceal very nicely I bet...

I have "That Every Man Be Armed," John Adams's bio, Locke's works on order.... What else should the patriotic American read?

    weapon retention

So, these two officers come in to my workplace, one with an empty holster. Just to tease, I say, "Looks like you forgot something there, Bud." He looks down as his partner looks over, and says, "Dude! Where's yer Gun!?" "Aw, Man! I left it back on the table!" (Hopefully at the station and not...

race gun for home defense or carry

Anybody consider an STI/SV type gun for carry or home defense? Seems like there might be advantages to a heavy gun with a 6" ported & compensated barrel, 2# trigger and 28 rnd mag for home defense. Seems something a bit scaled down might do well for carry. Thoughts, opinions? youngun

    The line in the sand

Anyone read Jeff Snyder's "Nation of Cowards"? Some excellent essays. Last one explores where we might ought to place this line in the sand, the last straw. [...] "Do the Brady Act and the assault weapons ban violate the Constitution? Have our legislators and president violated their oath of...

    Win 70 trigger lightening

So,If I back completely off the spring, that's about how light I want my trigger to be. Am I just asking too much of a factory trigger? How easy/risky is it to try to better mate the sear engagement for a crisper break/less travel? In short, I want this thing to go boom as soon as I put a...

    win 70 trigger reinstall

It's the middle of the night, so I'll probably have it figured out by the time anyone cares to read this, but just in case: I took the pin out, holding the trigger to the redeiver. Now I can't get the pin back in. It has no trouble going through the various parts individually, but when I try to...

    max OAL

To find the maximum OAL of a given bullet in my rifle, should I simply seat a bullet in a piece of brass and chamber it, then subtract - what? - .005" or so? This is for hunting, BTW, not sharpshooting. Thanks for the help. youngun

    bullet shape

Why would you NOT want a boattail? Obviously there's a reason, b/c they aren't all boattails. I understand the BT increases BC, downrange performance; does it sacrifice something uprange? youngun

    4350 or Reloader 19, or?

I'm just rolling up my sleeves to start loading some '06 rounds, 165 gr and 180 gr, and it seems these two powders are pretty popular. Wonder if anyone out there can tell me a reason to pick one over the other to start with, or even suggest a different powder. (Varget, for instance?) Thanks for...

    Speer Grand Slam for whitetail?

I'd like to go deer hunting this winter; Found some Grand Slams on closeout, $13/50, in 150, 165 &180; Is this too tough a bullet, just punch a clean hole? I'm thinking .100yds. Thanks for the help! youngun

Do I just need a new barrel in order to shoot .280 Rem out of my '06? Can one just swap barrels like that?

    Bloodties

Excellent book by Ted Kerasote. I picked up "In Defense of Hunting" a while back, and liked it well enough until I found where he espouses his anti-assault weapons view. He referenced this book, which is turning out to be what I'd hoped "Defense" would be. In it, he travles to and lives with...
