I'm being offered a Lee Enfield for $300

What should I be looking for? I have no use for the rifle, but I understand it may have historical significance for someone besides myself. I would like to turn a profit because while I do admire this old British workhorse, war surplus has no place in my stable. I have a rudimentary knowledge...

    School me on M1 Carbines

I have a coworker who approached me about M1 Carbines. I don't know much about them, but told him I'd do some research. He was interested in finding out which manufacturers made the "best" M1 Carbine. The research I've done over the last couple hours indicates a few things. There were many...

    Moral dilemma

I work with this guy. He's a certified gun crank. I enjoy working with him for a number of reasons. Good guy to work with professionally in my line of work (I'm a surveyor/field engineer for a construction company, and he's a civil construction foreman). I enjoy talking with him about guns and...

.357 mag for deer: bullet construction?

I'd like to take my Marlin 1894CB out for Texas whitetail next season. I'm curious about bullet design and effectiveness on deer. I have chosen an American Eagle 158 grain jacketed soft point. My gun likes them. I figure that penetration is better than expansion. I'd prefer to have an exit...

Just put my first 30-30 on layaway!

Found a great-looking Marlin 336C in a local gunshop. Nice wood, no blemishes on the steel. Pricetag was $479. After finding no blemishes on the wood or steel I jumped on it. This is the 6+1 version of the 336 with a 20" barrel. Can't wait to pick it up!

I'm thinking about making my first "investment" purchase.

The local Gander Mountain has had a Marlin 1894FG (I think) for about six months now. It's a lever carbine chambered in .41 magnum. .357 and .44 versions fly off the shelves, but nobody seems to want this one. What do you think? Wise purchase for future selloff of a great gun in an uncommon...

I KNEW I shouldn't have gone into Gander Mountain today!

Stupid little devil on my shoulder, in cahoots with the stupid little devil on my other shoulder decided for me that I should buy the new Marlin 1895GS stainless Guide Gun .45-70, despite my sincerest efforts to thwart them. What could I do? It was a 2-1 vote and I lost. Little bastards. The...

Just what is a "varmint rifle", anyway?

Please excuse my ignorance. I see so many references to varmint rifles and varmint cartridges. Usually they are rifles that shoot small-caliber bullets at tremendous velocities. Why is that setup preferred for shooting, say, coyotes? Seems to me a .30-06 would knock a coyote flat on its ass...

    Tell me about holsters

I'll be taking my CHL class soon and should have my license a few months after that. I'm still trying to figure out my method of carry. I'm 5'9" and about 155 lbs soaking wet. I live in a very warm, humid climate. My summer attire (which I wear for a good seven months of the year) consists of...

    S&W 586 L-Comp - Perfect carry revolver?

http://www.smith-wesson.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10001&storeId=10001&productId=43926&langId=-1&isFirearm=Y I keep looking at this one on S&W's site. I know that the all-steel L-frame is large and heavy, especially in comparison to the SP101 or the J-frames. However...

Ruger SP101 .327 Fedmag, Ruger answers

Please do not let this thread derail onto the topic of debating the merits or shortcomings of the .327 mag cartridge. This thread addresses my personal experiences with the SP101 .327 mag and Ruger's customer service. I ordered my SP101 .327 on March 5, 2008. It has now been just over six...

Made a completely unexpected purchase today

I live in Beaumont, TX and Gustav is approaching. I'm leaving early, early tomorow morning for a hotel in Austin. My 686P is at Smith & Wesson for repairs. My SP101 in .327 Fedmag is still on backorder. I wanted a handgun to take with me in my car, so I picked up a new 637. Also bought 100...

    Good all-around barrel length?

I enjoy certain things that contain a wide variety of practical applications in one jack-of-all-trades package. My next gun purchase will probably be a shotgun. I'm curious about barrel lengths. The local Gander Mountain has a Remington 870 Express 12ga with a 21" barrel. I like the short...

    .327 Federal Mag ammo

My .327 SP101 has been on backorder since early March, over four months now. However, found six boxes of .327 ammo on the shelf at Gander Mountain today. I bought it all; sorry to anyone in the Beaumont area. :o It wasn't cheap. Four boxes of the American Eagle 100 grn JSP, $32/box of 50. Two...

Handgun caliber preferance, with a twist

With the various common (and uncommon, although I feel they are a bit outside this discussion) calibers available there are the usual arguments or discussions of velocity, energy, penetration, expansion, capacity, recoil, and follow-up shots. For this discussion, I'd like to take follow-up...

Tell me about the S&W M65.

There is a used gun at the local Gander Mountain that caught my eye today. It was gorgeous, immediately caught my eye. It's a Model 65 with a three inch barrel. The proportions are just about perfect, it's a beautiful gun. Needs to be cleaned, but I didn't see anything mechanically wrong with...

    45-70 for Africa?

Straightforward question. I'm not about to take a trip to Africa, but I'm just wondering, theoretically, would a Marlin lever 45-70 with proper bullet selection be "enough" for most, if not all, of African game?

    Marlin 1894CB Sacrilege

I bought my 1894CB .357 for several reasons. For one, I already own a S&W 686P and I wanted a companion levergun to keep commonality of ammo between my revolver and carbine. For another, I like that firing the .357 mag out of an 18-20" barrel adds accuracy, velocity, energy and range far greater...

    S&W 686P binding up

I've had an ongoing problem with my 686+. I've been reluctant to post this for a couple months because I didn't want to tarnish the reputation of this fine revolver, but I realize that idea is silly and it does the community more good to publicize the issue, and perhaps I can get some feedback...

Just put a Ruger Charger on layaway

I'm not sure if this belongs in General Handguns, Semi-Autos, or Rifles. This seems like the best choice. So two months ago went to the local range, shot my 686+, and came back into the building when I was done. The store owner had a new Charger on display that wasn't there when I came into the...
