    6.8 SPC questions

6.8 SPC, is it a good round for deer? In terms of effectiveness and range, is it equivalent to 30-30? Or 6.5x55? Something in that range? Then, I don't see any 6.8 bullets for reloading. Is this bullet the same as 270 or 277? I think a 264 is the same as 6.5mm. 284 is 7mm. Thanks

    Un-pimp my scope (too shiny)

I have a glossy black Leupold var-x 2 scope and I'd like it to have a dull finish. I'm thinking of painting it with flat black lacquer, or just working it with some steel wool. Any advantage of one method over the other, or any other ideas? (buying a new scope is not an option at the moment -...

    Flat-tops legal for Service Rifle?

It looks like Flat-Top AR's with removable carry-handle sights are legal as standard Service Rifles. From the CMP site, Anyone read it different? It looks to me like a relaxation of rules. Not that it would help my shooting, but maybe allow for a more versatile rifle for competition AND...

    NEF Rifled Shotgun?

Anybody have any experience with the NEF? I see a combo 12GA Rifled barrel and in-line muzzle loader for a reasonable price. How's the trigger? Accuracy? Thanks

Inspector, why replace a good extractor?

In another thread, Inspector Callahan recommended that with any new 1911, the extractor should be replaced by one called a "Wilson Bulletproof" and then tuned. "Best 28 bucks you'll ever spend" was the claim. I don't understand this. If the spent brass is flying away, then the existing...

    press for new reloader?

I'm interested in starting to reload ammo, mostly for .30-'06 and .223 to begin with. I'm looking to buy a press, etc. Budget sort of rules out the Dillon 550B, which seems to be the number one choice. I'm currently looking at the Lee Load Master, the RCBS Rockchucker Master reload kit, and...

    Ruger .45 models?

I was looking at some Ruger .45 models the other day. One was a kp97d (or kp97dc?). The other was a p90 something or other. Is there any difference between a p90 and a p97? The only visible differences I noticed was the p90 had a safety in addition to a decocker where the p97 only had a...

    value of winchester 96 30-30

I saw a nice, "brand new" (from 1970's) winchester 96 lever 30-30 for sale. What is a reasonable price for one of these? The guy was asking 250. Thanks.

    Disassembling sporterized Mauser bolt

I asked this question on Gunboards.com also, and I'll look in both places for answers, questions, cheap shots, etc. ;) I have a sporterized Gewehr (sp?) 98, dated 1915. Among it's many "improvements", it has a Buehler safety on the bolt. The lever seems to have two positions: Safe (up), and...

    Removing Enfield rear sight base

How can I remove the rear sight base from an Enfield No 1 Mark 3 2A1 Ishapore 7.62 NATO barrel? There is one pin through the sight base and through the barrel above the bore. Once that's removed, the sight base doesn't slide off. Is it soldered, glued, painted, shrunk, or just rusted in...

Is this old gun safe to shoot?

I ran across a Lefever Nitro Special from Lefever Arms of Ithaca, NY. The serial is 229xxx. The two barrels are side-by-side and it has two triggers. It is in nice shape with most of the blue intact on the barrel and none of the blue intact on the receiver. Can this design handle modern...

how to handle a "found" pistol

A friend recently found a .22LR RG Industries revolver among her deceased husband's stuff. It seems to be in good condition with some bluing scratched. I checked it for her to make sure it wasn't loaded. She doesn't want the pistol. She doesn't know if her husband had any record of the...

    Enfield Number 7 in .308?

I looked at a an Enfield Number 7 Military Remake from Gibbs Firearms of West Virginia. It is apparently remanufactured from an Ishapore .308 based on an abandoned Australian jungle carbine design. It seemed like a fun, light little gun, but I don't know anything about the company. Do any...

    Number 6?

I saw a bolt-action rifle, a "number 6", British (Lee-Enfield?) chambered for 7.62 Nato. Does anyone have any experience with one of these? I haven't found any reference to any "number" bigger than 5 (the jungle carbine). The part I liked was the price, and the fact that it wasn't chambered...

Any opinions on .223 bolt action?

I saw a couple of .223 bolt action rifles at a gunshow: Savage model 111FXP3 w/scope, a Remington 700 ADL w/synthetic stock, and a Remington Model 7 lightweight w/18" tapered barrel. Any experience with these rifles and this caliber for accurate target shooting and for small game? Regards

    Ammo for M1

Does the M1 Garand have any special ammo requirements? Is the pressure generated by commercial rounds sufficient to work the action safely without blowing the shooter or the rifle to kingdom come? I've been using mostly Remington CoreLokt 180 grain rounds in a 1903 Springfield, and I'm...

    Over-cleaning with copper solvent?

I'm cleaning an old 30-06 rifle with Hoppe's copper solvent. The directions indicate to clean it until the patches stop coming out green. Well, I've been cleaning it twice a day, letting the copper solvent stay in the barrel between cleanings, and after a week and a half, the patches still...
