I've always wondered what the benefits are of having a 'holographic' or a 'red dot' scope (versus nothing at all)? With only a 1x magnification, is the value in reliably and consistently allowing the shooter to 'frame' the target or is there some other benefit? Any thoughts would be appreciated.

Newbie here. How long can you store ammo: under ideal (and less than ideal) conditions? Last month, I discovered some .22 ammo I'd had from about 20 years ago and, without much thought, fired it in my Marlin plinker at the range. The report 'fumped' rather than 'cracked' and it really gummed up...
