For the past few day's my loading lever has been dropping down when I shoot. Not all the time but every now and then. Yesterday it did it 4 out of 6 shots. It latches so tight that I can't force it down and the spring in the latch feels plenty strong enough. Anyone have any idea whats causing...

1000+ rounds through my 51 Navy Colt

Today I opened my 5Th. #1 canister of Pyrodex "P". So I'm figureing #4 shot up and a pound of BP = 7000gr. and I was loading 22gr. to 25gr. in my 51 Navy .36 with a .380 ball. That works out to 280 shots per canister or there abouts. Most of you know that I have been shooting this gun without a...

    Best bore scrubber

When scrubbing the bore of my black powder guns I use Flitz and it works great but does anyone know of anything that may work better? I'm not one to keep up with new products for that kind of stuff but thought maybe some of you would know what's best. Thanks, Mike

Lube , No lube, test results

After shooting well over 200 rounds from my 1851 Navy without any lube over ball or lubed wads or lube pills of any kind there was no chain fires at all. This test was with a .380 ball and 22g of Pyrodex "P" . The accuracy was no different than when I used lube over the ball or wads and lube. I...

    What's in your 51 Navy .36?

Just wondering what some of you 51 navy shooters have found to work best for you when it comes to powder and ball or conical.. Did some playing and shooting today with the 51 Navy. I used 25g of Pyrodex "P" and one of my pure lead cast balls for the first 12 shots from a not so steady bench rest...

The Colt .45 never won the west!!

Why is it so many people believe that the Colt 45 won the west??? By the time the 45 came alone the west was already won by REAL men with REAL revolvers like the Remington .44, Colt 51 and 61 and the old army. The only guy's who carried the Colt 45 were wimps and REAL cowboy want- a- be's...

Holster I made for my 51 Navy

A friend sent me some leather to make this holster. After saturating the leather with alcohol and wrapping the gun in Saran wrap I form fitted the leather to the gun as it was drying. Also clamped the edges nice and tight then trimmed it and double stiched it.It has a tripple layer of leather...

    Antiqueing done on my 51

Finished antiqueing my 1851 Navy Colt today and it never cost me a dime. My local hardware store had a bottle that just said "browning" on it and it was made by CVA. The owner gave it to me because it was full of dust and he had no idea how old it was. Then my wife gave me a bottle of white...

Recently I have gone back to basics and it sure makes C&B life simpler and more fun.It seems we keep getting more and more caught up in the "special lube's ", special wads, Lube pills , special oils, bad lubes , bad oils, bad grease , good grease and my favorite...."Shooting black powder is just...

    My Nipple wrench

Lately there has been alot of talk about good and bad nipple wrenches. A few years ago I was having problems getting a couple of them loose and the two nipple wrenches I had were just about worthless. After 10 cups of coffee and pulling out my hair trying to get the &^*($# nipples out I came up...

What load is best for the 1851 Navy .36?

After playing with this new 1851 Navy .36 fora few days now I seem to have mixed feelings about the not only the best load the best way to load it. All test have been done with Pyrodex "P" and the 380 cast ball. 22g of py.p ,dry wad, ball and grease over ball shoots great! 25g of py.p, dry wad...

Today I loaded both cylinders for this new 51 navy and headed out the lane behind my work shop looking for trouble. Wad, No wad. Grease, No grease ?

After making black smoke for so long I found a combination that seem's to work best to keep the fouling down in the barrel of a revolver when useing the REAL BLACK like Goex. I load powder, dry wad made of wool, a little grease over the wad and then the ball/bullet and like to also use just a...

How to load. 40g fffg in a .44 Remington

There is a rumor going around that you "can't load 40g of fffg" in your Remington .44. Well, its not true and in fact you can do it useing a 1/8" wad over the powder and still have room left for a gob of grease over the ball if wanted.I have been doing this for a while and use this load when...

    swaged or cast?

For as long as I can remember I have used swaged balls except in my .32 Penn. long rifle squirrel snuffer. It was so accurated with either that it never seemed to matter. In my .40 and .45 rifles I always used swaged as well as my Remington .44, it likes the swaged .454. For some of you who...
