Does anyone make a 1911 slide with NO serrations?

I can't seem to find a Government-length slide with no cocking serrations. (Did see one Commander-length like that though.) Anybody ever seen one available for sale? I'd like to cut my own serrations from scratch. I don't think it would be valid to mill off regular serrations.

Is it me or do Kimbers require way oversized parts?

Last night I fitted an EGW oversized ejector to my Ultra TLE II. Nose and tail length had to be filed down quite a bit, but the ejector isn't high enough to fill in the gap in the slide. It's slightly annoying. (Otherwise the ejector appears to be very stout.) I also put on an Ed Brown...

    First gun show purchase...

...a $150 shotgun. It's a Montgomery Ward model, made in France. Blued with walnut stocks. When I pick it up (after the 10-day wait) I'll post some pics for some help with ID. I was specifically looking for a cheap trap gun and the 'Ward seemed to fit the bill. 30" barrel, mod. choke, short...

SW1911 range report, yes another one

This is the carbon steel model, blued with cocking serrations only on the rear of the slide, external extractor, Novak's sights and wood grips with the S&W medallion planted in them. When I first brought the gun home and spent some time fondling it, I must say I was unimpressed with the quality...

My AAA road map shows shooting range locations!

I was lost in Inglewood ("up to no goood!") the other day and bought the first map I laid eyes on at a nearby gas station. It is an Auto Club map. Anyway, bored at lunch the other day I was examining the map and noticed a little symbol that looks like a target. Look to legend, whoa, it IS a...

Legal to buy a new Caspian 1911 receiver in CA?

Well my fave FFL isn't open for a few more days, so I figgered I'd post the question here. I'd like to begin a new 1911 project from a Caspian (or other brand) 1911 receiver. Don't know if they're legal since they're not on the DOJ roster of approved handguns. Anyone?

    A note on "G.I. contract" 1911 mags

The genuine mil-issue mags will have an assembly number and a manufacturer code on the base. The manufacturer's code in this photo is "30745." This is known as a CAGE code, which stands for Commercial And Government Entity. All government contracting companies have a CAGE code. They are...

Tell me more about the .460 Rowland

Was flipping through the Brownells catalog today looking for some ideas on my 1911 project. (I know, looking through a catalog for ideas = I have too much money?) Brownells carries a .460 Rowland "drop in" kit for 1911s, which is basically a barrel w/ comp and slide. (More...

What shall we call "high capacity" mags?

The journalist in me is looking for a "standard" term for a magazine that can hold more than 10 rounds of ammunition. Pre-1994 mags were called "pre-ban," so let's rule out the grandfathered mag term. "Post-ban" generally refers to the Clinton ban restricted mags, so let's rule that out too...

    SIG P228 vs. Beretta 92F?

So to people who own either, what do you consider their respective pros and cons? I'm considering the purchase of one as my desk-drawer pistol in 9mm. I like both in terms of recoil, accuracy and availability of 10+ capacity mags. My hands probably like the ergonomics of the SIG's decocker...

Anybody know the screw size in a Mossberg 590 barrel?

Hey group, I have a new Moss 590 barrel (Parkerized) that has no sight and no nut that holds it to the end of the mag tube. I can make the nut and retainer, but there's a threaded hole in the bottom of the barrel band with an unknown (to me) thread pitch and diameter. It looks like the hole is...

Quote from tonight's episode of "ALIAS"

In one scene a bad guy is cutting "dumdums" from lead roundnose bullets. His cohort walks up behind him, sees what he's doing. "It's a .45 caliber, isn't it dangerous enough?"

Springfield TRP or Baer Custom Carry?

$1250 for the Springfield, $1400 for the Baer. At these figures, the extra $150 for the Baer would be a non-issue. The intended purpose is primary defensive weapon (home, hotel and carry). Any other 1911 choices in this range? The attributes I'm looking for are: *California legal *Durable...

Which brand of 1911 ejector is preferable?

Hey guys, my Kimber's ejector's rear leg is loose. If I shine a light into the ejector/extractor area of the gun while working the slide slowly, I can see the ejector flexing. There are several brands on Brownell's available for $20 to $30. Ed Brown's "Bulletproof" ejectors have a lifetime...

Help me pick a single-shot trap gun

I have my mind on one gun, but I won't mention it to avoid "poisoning" the opinion pool. I'm just shooting casual trap with my dad for fun, nothing serious. Would like a nice-looking gun with wood stocks and blued steel, but, am open to other ideas. Bueller? Bueller? ;-)

Questions on 1911 barrel fitting (bushing and link)

I've been reading as many 1911 'smithing books as I can get my hands on (Los Angeles Public Library = two thumbs up). ALL of them say to ream an undersized ID bushing to fit the barrel and/or turn down the OD of the barrel. Is there a reason why the barrel bushing could not be bored on a lathe...

Silver solder strong enough to join shotgun barrel lug?

Hey there, first I want to thank all that replied to my question about ramped barrels for 1911s. I have been working on a Mossberg project gun and now have a custom-length barrel and custom-length magazine (longer). I would like to join the barrel to the magazine tube like the original system...

Are 1911 ramped barrels really an improvement?

I'm reading one of the Sweeney gunsmithing books, and he passingly mentions the ramped barrel. ("Wilson-Nowlins" ramp.) To me, it looks like a worthwhile reliability mod for guns that will be shooting hollowpoint ammunition, but that's just a knee-jerk reaction.

Review: California Competition Works 12-ga. "stripper"

This is the product: http://www.demooner.com/shotguns.php Instead of being a classical stripper clip that holds cartridges together for speed-loading a rifle, the Demooner version is a belt clip that holds 12-gauge shells for quick one-at-a-time dispensing. The unit is well made and sturdy and...

Do mags "drop free" from the CZ 75 B?

Just wondering. I have not handled this firearm. According to CZ's web site, the CZ 75 B SA (single action only) uses drop-free magazines. This is not mentioned for the other guns, so I took it to mean the others do not drop free. So....?
