    Handgun "grip": thumb position?

I carry a Glock 23. I grip the gun with my dominant hand thumb curled down, resting (just barely) on the mag release. The support hand thumb locks down on top of it. This works great for both one hand and two hand shooting...only one basic, firm grip. If I use the "thumbs up" position, the...

    problem with XD45 compact

I somehow goofed up with re-assembling the pistol. I had field stripped it and re-assembled once with no problem. But during the second re-assembly as I was pushing the slide back to engage the slide stop before lowering the take down lever, there was a small little "snap" and the slide locked...

    Cavalry Arms poly receiver

I'm thinking about buying one. Anybody out there who has actually bought one, slapped on an upper and used it? I'd like some input on how well the various pins fit, how some of the detents work (like the selector lever detent, etc), and if it functions reliably. Thanks.

    V-V N340: position sensitive

I've been working up a 45acp load for 185gr jhp using V-V N340. Just out of curiousity I ran some across the chrono with the powder to the front of the cases, then some with the powder at the rear. Wow! Almost 90fps difference. With powder all the way to the rear (I pointed the muzzle up and...

    Andy Stanford (OPS) class

Andy Stanford is going to be out this way in the spring. I was wondering if any TFLers have taken his handgun class and how it compared with other "big name" trainers you may have experienced. Thanks

    Re-finish causing 1911 to malf

I sent in a fully functional, but very rusty, Springfield in for one of these new teflon/poly finishes. Gun now looks great but doesn't work. It won't lock the slide open on an empty mag and it won't chamber the first round from a full mag from slide lock. I'm starting to hear that the finish...

    Armed and untrained

I'm kind of curious about all these folks carrying concealed handguns these days. It seems like more and more states have made it easier for people to (legally) carry deadly weapons. Quite often there is little or no training required to obtain a "license", and hardly ever any follow up...

    V-V N340: chrono results

Just back from a chrono check of some .45acp loads using V-V N340. I was loading Rem 185gr jhp bullets in new Starline cases with Win large pistol primers. OAL was 1.215." Velocities were low. 7.5gr of V-V N340 was only getting an average of 885fps from my S.A. "compact" (4"bbl). This is too low...

    new supplier

I recently received a catalog from Graf and Sons. It looks like they have some decent prices. Anybody have any experience with these folks? Thanks.

    Plastic holsters

So, being a hip, modern, and in-tune-with-current-trends kind of guy, I went out and bought a couple of them (now not so) new "plastic" holsters. Got the "top of the line" brand names, too. Anyhow, I ain't a convert. After a couple of hundred "draws", even tho, yeah, I kinda dig the really cool...

    Muzzle Flash: Handgun powders

There is a very informative article concerning muzzle flash in the latest issue of the IDPA Tactical Journal (Vol. 5 Issue 2). The author, Charles Hamilton, did a pretty good subjective test of various powders available to handloaders. Unfortunately, he did not have the opportunity to use any...

    1911 thumb safety modification

The thumb safety on my new Springfield is a little too easy to disengage. Perhaps you fellow dremel tool hackers can offer some tips on increasing the pressure required to get it to go "off safe"? Maybe grind a little bit more off so that the plunger extends further under the angle before it...

    .45 acp chrono results

I ran some Rem 185gr jhp .45acp handloads across the screens today and found some interesting items I thought I'd share. The loads were all 9.7gr of AA#5, using Win large psitol primers. This has been my "practice" round for a while and I finally had some time to check it out. The first batch...

    Rainier bullets

I'm experiencing problems with loading 45ACP Rainier bullets. About 1/3 of the rounds have a deformed bullet after being seated. I first tried the 200grJHP, and just now gave up on the 185FP. I'm loading on a Dillon 550B, Dillon dies, and yes, I am using the correct bullet seating stem for each...

    M1A op rod dismount problem

Anybody else out there ever have a problem getting the op rod out of the receiver rail? I posted in "The Smithy" and thought I'd try here also. This is a new M1A and it's driving me nuts. I used to have a like new M1 Garand so I'm familiar with the procedure. The Garand it was a piece of cake...

    M1-A operating rod problem.

I can't dismount the op rod from the receiver. The dismount notice looks way too small. Usually only light finger pressure is required to dismount the op rod. IF I can ever get this thing out, I am considering reducing the dimentions of the guide stud on the op rod. Any suggestions?

    Glock 23 repair

The spacer sleeve broke on my ancient g23. I replaced it with a new one. I'm thinking about also putting in new spring cups (easy) and maybe a new channel liner. Anybody out there ever pull out the channel liner? If so, how'd you get that little gizmo out? By the way, Glockmeister has been great...

    Low muzzle flash powder

How about it guys. Can anybody recommend a ball pistol powder with a mid range burn rate and LOW muzzle flash? In the low light room exercises this weekend the Alliant PowerPistol loads I was using in my .40 Glock were a total disaster. I would prefer a stateside manufacturer, but will consider...

    MMC sights for 1911

Has anybody had MMC install their adjustable night sights on your 1911 style pistol? I'm thinking about sending my slide to these folks and wonder if anyone has experience with their machine work. Thanks and stay safe.

    Colt 1911 ejectors

I've been working on a couple of Colt 1911s and notice that the ejectors on these (an Officers and a Commander) are weird. They look like Colt slimmed them down on one side and then reinforced them on the other. I dropped an Ed Brown ejector into one and it fits and functions just fine. Anybody...
