PSA: my Savage 99 in 308 likes the Barnes Vortex 168gr TTSX

out to 200 yards. Just in case any one was wondering about whether their Savage 99s would shoot non-lead projectiles. I was about 2" high at 100 yards and 1" high at 200 yards shooting with a fixed 4x scope. d47

    410 question.

I was given a 410. It's a savage 58 bolt action. It's sized for 3" shells, but that might be normal for 410. I'm thinking it might be fun to chase rabbits while walking with the dog. I know nothing about 410 shells. How do they measure the shot? the same way as a 12? What would be good...

    cleaning cases with primers

I have inherited a bunch of old (1980s) 308. i was going to pull the bullets and dump the powder and clean the brass to resize the necks and reload as 260 Remington. Can I do this without removing the primers? What are the pros and cons if I keep the flash holes clear? I'm not looking for...

    Safe Recommendations?

Hey all, I"m thinking of expanding my safe. It's a capacity 10 and I'm thinking of long term growth as my kids approach shooting age. Perhaps an 18 or a 24 capacity safe? I am not sure if either of these 18 or 24 counts AR-shaped rifles the same? I have several in my safe, but because of the...

Arisaka versus the Bubba: front band collar issues

I have an Arisaka type 38 carbine that is in fine condition with one weird quirk: After shooting a round or two, the front hand guard band comes loose and begins to rattle around the barrel like a drunken gymnast. Apparently, a previous owner decided that there was some problem with the collar...

Lack of situational awareness: it happens to everyone

A good example of "fog of war." An armed robber confronts multiple mothers outside a school in Brazil. One of the mothers is armed. She slips to strong side of robber while he is occupied with trying to grab a purse and chambers a round. Then she steps in and puts pistol almost in touch...

Colorado Front Range Planning Site for shooting on Public Land

Hey all, if you live in the front range of Colorado, you might want to take 30 mins to go to this site, read up a bit and comment to the USFS. Posted as a public service to public land recreational shooters so they won't be surprised by "sudden" new rules. I've seen a steady drum beat of...

Felons and Firearms: Am I unclear on the topic?

http://www.timescall.com/longmont-local-news/ci_31188935/da-no-firearms-charges-fatal-longmont-self-defense?source=mostpopular This DA won't charge a felon who used a gun in self-defense. From the article it sounds like the felon brought the gun to the crime scene with him. Maybe there's...

6.5 Grendel build: SS or Melonite barrel?

I'm thinking of buying or building (probably buying, to be honest) a 6.5 Grendel upper for hunting. I'm thinking of getting an 18" barrel. The two most common barrels that I see are stainless steel and Chro-Moly steel with a melonite or nitrite finish. I have a melonite finish on another of...

What's the best accuracy anyone has seen/heard from a poly lower?

I am considering a light AR build for the kids (and my use) based on a poly lower. Reviews that are 2012 or earlier are based on non-reinforced poly and generally agree that the polymer needs help. Post 2013 poly lowers generally seem to incorporate some level of metal reinforcement and...

Baffled: pierced primers. Please look over my shoulder.

Ok, I'm often slow to actually sit down and begin to solve problems. Generally, though, once engaged, I can suss out the cause (if not the resolution) to a problem. This issue has me buffaloed. Problem: my MGI 7.62x39 "enhanced" Bolt and firing pin sometimes pierces primers on steel-cased...

260 rem and 6.5 Arisaka: is one powder possible?

Over the past several years, I've been slowly inching my way closer to reloading. I've bought a Hornady reloading book and the dies for 9/40 pistol and for 3 different rifle calibers: 260Rem, 6.5 Arisaka and 7.7 Arisaka. I'm probably not going to do the 7.7 arisaka for some time. I'm...

tilting block versus rotating bolt: advancement or just different?

I notice that that most modern popular semi-auto rifles use the rotating bolt system. I've had a number of older rifles: Hakim, vz58 and sks that used a tilting bolt action. Is there some particular reason that rotating bolt seems to have displaced the tilting bolt?

stupid question: Why two types of cleaning rod threading

Ok, this is a completely useless question, but I"m curious. Why are my two cleaning rods threaded differently? Were there two major makers of cleaning rods in the past? Kind of a Ford/Chevy thing, and the two standards grew up in parallel? And yes, it's a pet peeve, but not a big enough...

I have a new thought point in the gun debate

Lead in, did you buy a lotto ticket? Why? What were your REAL odds of winning? Oh, you did? Well, I have a gun b/c the odds of me meeting a dangerous criminal might be near-astronomical, but it's less than the odds of winning your lotto. You made an investment in a chance payoff. I made...

Question: Anyone use Hornady steel 7.62x39 SST tip in AR?

I bought 50 of these a year or two ago to use in my AR with Bushmaster 7.62x39 upper while deer hunting dark timber. They were poly-coated. Function was great. Fast forward a few years of zeroing, practice, etc and I'm running out. So I bought a new box of 50 from Graf and they arrived...

crazy thought: possible fix for DI issues?

Ok, I sometimes have random thoughts occur to me and normally I just suppress them and get on with life so people don't think I'm crazy. Here's one that might be crazy, but might be a fix for what everyone recognizes as a source of potential problems for the AR/DI platform, dumping carbon into...
