Is Ruger the best at anything?

This isn't meant to be a flame, but I was wondering if Ruger is considered the leader at any particular firearm model in their segment? The only Ruger I own is a New Vaquero revolver. I liked theirs the best when looking at a SAA clone. However, for 9mm I think SIG and CZ is a cut above. For...

Want to buy a pre-1898 gun

I'm looking to buy my first (only?) pre-1899 antique gun. I have no particular purpose for it, nor preference for pistol vs rifle. What I want it something modern by the standards of the day, so I can use current ammunition off the shelf in whatever caliber it is. I don't want black powder...

    TJF shotguns?

Does anyone have an opinion on TJF shotguns? http://www.heirloomarmes.com/tjf_pop.htm

    .308 bullet selection help

I bought myself my first modern high power rifle, a .308 Tikka T3. Most of my other rifles are surplus and have only shot surplus or cheap Brown Bear ammo. My knowledge of bullets in modern rifles is nil. While I don't hunt (yet) and mostly target practice, I'd like to standardize on a single...

Bring back the cheap surplus ammo!

If there was one type of rifle surplus ammo you could bring back and have it cheap again, what would it be? I know we'll never see it again, but since hindsight is 20/20 which is your pick? .30-06, 8mm Mauser, .303 British, 7x57, 7.5x55, 6.5x55, 7.62x39, etc. If I could buy only one to...

Pick one caliber between .223 and .30-06

Not including .22LR, .223, .308 or .30-06. If you had to pick only a single caliber between those to fulfill all your 'needs', what would it be? This is not a practical exercise, nor is there any intended purpose behind the question. I'm just curious. I choose 6.5x55. I suspect .270 will win.

    Tikka T3 CTR scope recommendation

Having collected mostly older C&R bolt actions, I'm very new to scopes. I bought myself a Tikka T3 Scout CTR and I need some purchasing assistance. What are some appropriate rings for a Picatinny rail and a scope recommendation in the 2-9x range. What else do I need to buy? Thanks.

Surplus pistols - not my thing

For some reason I cannot explain, C&R surplus pistols have no appeal to me. I'm enamored with military surplus rifles and love collecting the usual suspects - Mausers, Swiss K31, SKS, etc. To me, those rifles have class and history. But the pistols...well...they're just "old". Anyone else...

    Beretta Centurion vs Cougar?

I'm looking to buy one of these older models to keep my SIG P229 company. I couldn't find a direct comparison of them, but they seem to be similar. I wanted something slightly smaller than a 92FS. Can anyone in the know compare these puppies? Thanks.

    Ruger Gunsite Scout "Export" version?

I know its already hard to get a Ruger these days with the backlog, so I assume acquiring the Export version of the GSR would be even harder. That being said, the difference is an 18" barrel instead of 16", no flash suppressor and in stainless. All three worthy upgrades IMO. Any way to get...

Scope my CZ 452 .22 for me

I just bought a CZ 452 American .22LR. I heard it was a good one and they were being discontinued, so I got it sight unseen. It looks really purty....haven't shot it yet. Being somewhat of a rifle noob...no wait, more of a scope/optics noob, I don't know what to buy to put on it. Can anyone...

    FAL accuracy

I'm looking to buy a .308 battle rifle, and instead of starting yet another thread that compares the FAL against the M1A, AR10 or any other option, I just wanted to address my last remaining reservation about the FAL. Why is it considered "only" a 2-4 MOA gun? Yah, I know why it was when it...

Recoil of .44 Mag N-frame is equivalent to ?

I'm mostly a handgun guy looking to beef up my rifle collection, so I post this out of naivety. I took the opportunity to rent a S&W .44 Magnum at my local range and bought a box of 20 cartridges. After shooting 6 rounds, I was already starting to hurt...but fought through the pain and...

    Peeps for a Marlin 336 and 1894c?

Through careful Internet hunting, I have landed a Marlin 336SS and 1894c, both pre-Remington, within the last few months. I want to add better sites to both of them. I want to keep the look of the rifle pretty close to stock, as I think a scope ruins it. I doubt either will ever be shot past...

    Ruger Mini-14 vs AR-15 cleaning?

I am trying to decide if I want to buy an AR-15 or Mini-14. Accuracy is somewhat important but not the only factor in my decision. In either case, it would be a range toy first and foremost. Accuracy, price, scope mounting options, etc are all important.....but the SINGLE most important...

    Reloading value question

I am not a reloader but have a question regarding the value of it. I do fully understand it's another hobby, in addition to shooting, and should be done for the enjoyment of it. My question are the numbers being thrown around as to the savings you can get. I see 50% as the average savings...

    Largest caliber you regularly shoot?

I was reading the Worst Kick Ever Felt!!!! thread and it got me thinking... What is the largest caliber you regularly shoot when you go out to practice? I imagine many of the .375H&H or higher shooters only zero their gun once in awhile or before a hunt since they are so punishing, so what is...

    Shooting bags/bench?

I know nothing about shooting bags, benches....but I want to buy something I can use at the range to steady myself when I shoot rifles or handguns. I see there are shooting bags filled with filler for handguns and a double-bag setup for rifles. Is there by chance a dual-bag setup that can be...

When a shotgun gets too expensive

I had a question about all the über expensive shotguns in the $20K+ range. At what point does a shotgun NOT get any better in quality? By quality, I mean fit (NOT finish), accuracy, materials and hand fitting? I know at one point you get into the extensive ornamentation and engraving, which...

    Hollon safes are 9 gauge?

I see that the Hollon Republic safes are listed with 9 gauge steel. That is a lot thicker than 12 gauge used on most Chinese safes. What puzzles me is the Hollon is around the same weight as most 11-12 gauge safes of the same size. The Winchester Silverado is an example. Same dimensions...
